Sexuality education: Greece moving one step forward

The school year 2021-2022 will be a landmark for sexuality education in Greece. The Greek Ministry of Education decided it will introduce Sexuality Education in national compulsory curricula for primary and secondary education within so-called “Skills Workshops” (link).

For almost 30 years, sexuality education in Greece was merely part of non-compulsory educational programmes (e.g. health education programmes, “Theme Week”), suggesting that Greek society was somehow unprepared to accept an early initiation in the educational system.

However, the revelations of the #MeToo movement in Greece at the beginning of 2021 (link) created much discussion about young people’s knowledge and awareness of issues related to human sexuality, gender relationships, sexual dignity and diversity. Meanwhile, the completion of the Skills Workshops’ pilot implementation in schools during the school year 2020-2021 led the Greek Ministry of Education to announce the integration of sex Education as an axis of Skills Workshops in the compulsory school curriculum.

The next school year will open its doors aiming to improve all Greek students’ awareness of sexuality issues. This educational reform promises to greatly contribute to an inclusive education.
